Today marks one month since the beginning of the eruption that is ongoing at the Sundhnúkur crater row. The eruption, which began on the evening of March 16, is the fourth in a series of eruptions that started when magma began accumulating beneath Svartsengi in late October 2023.more

The eruption has now lasted longer than all of the eruptions in this series of eruptions at the Sundhnúkagígar crater row. It is the second longest eruption since the eruption in Mt Fagradalsfjall in 2021, which lasted 6 months. Today, one month has passed since the eruption that is currently taking place at Sundhnúkagígar crater row. The eruption, which began on the evening of March 16, is the fourth since magma accumulation began under Svartsengi at the end of October 2023. more

Volcanic activity at Sundhnúkur is ongoing

The eruption that started at the Sundhnúkur crater row on the evening of March 16 is still ongoing. One vent remains active, as it has been since April 5. Lava continues to flow southward from the vent but does not travel far, so the lava field continues to build up near the crater. There are no apparent signs of lava advancing towards the protective barriers north of Grindavík, Suðurstrandarvegur, or Melhólsnáma.more

Blue Lagoon closed yesterday until 2 today
No risks are taken when it comes to air quality for the guests of the Blue Lagoon and yesterday it was closed until today at 2 in the afternoon. Unhealthy air quality was measured at the Blue Lagoon yesterday, which is closed as a result and does not reopen until 14 today. The pollution comes from the eruption in the Sundhnúkagígar crater row. more

The earthquake was measured 3.3 in strength and was detected at 10:20 am this morning under Kleifarvatn lake. An earthquake was felt in many parts of the southwest Icelandic region today. It triggered a seismic burst under Kleifarvatn lake. The burst, by contrast, appears to be receding. more

Suspicious men in yellow vests peeking through windows
A resident in the area tried to talk to two men wearing yellow vests marked with ÍAV when he saw them peeking through a window, but they did not answered and hurried away. There have been suggestions on the Facebook neighborhood page “Betra Breiðholt” about suspicious travels of men wearing yellow vests in Selja- and Hólahverfi neighborhoods in Breiðholt. A resident in the area says that two men rushed away when he interfered. more
