People were staying in 20 houses in Grindavík
Úlfar Lúðvíksson at the scene today. People stayed in 20 houses in Grindavík last night and harbor activities have begun in the town. In comparison, people were staying in 56 houses the previous night before evacuations were taken. There are hopes that the Njarðvík pipeline will remain intact so that it will not be repeated when the water went down in Reykjanes last February. Responders are mainly concerned about gas pollution. more

Photos: Natural threshold is taking over
View across the Blue Lagoon, the new lava, the defense wall, and a natural threshold that directs the lava to the west. The photo was taken with a 360° camera and is therefore a wide image and the proportions are slightly distorted. Next in the photo is the road that crosses the dam, but you can see that an old lava field lies just beyond it and to the west. The lava field acts as a natural threshold and pushes the lava to the west. The lava flow that is now flowing along the defense walls and yesterday crossed the parking lots at the Blue Lagoon has reached a natural threshold just south of where the parking lots were and are starting to flow to the west. more

Three Vents are Active Along the Eruptive Fissure

Since yesterday, three areas along the eruptive fissure between Stóra-Skógfell and Sýlingarfell have been active. Activity in these areas remained fairly stable overnight, with the central vent showing the highest activity levels. Minor changes have been observed in volcanic tremor, consistent with stable activity in the eruption.more

Entire Blue Lagoon car park now covered in lava
A few street lamps at the end of the parking lot are still standing, but otherwise, all of the parking lot is under lava. The entire parking lot of the Blue Lagoon is now under lava, except for a few street lamps that stand at the end of what used to be a parking lot. Then the lava seems to have spread a little and, among other things, just now passed over a sign directing visitors to the car park. more

The lava is right next to the car park and will probably flow over it soon. Lava is now flowing right next to the parking lot of the Blue Lagoon and will probably cross the lot shortly. However, it is not believed that the lava will enter the defense wall, reservoir, or the power plant in Svartsengi. more

Ásrún Kristinsdóttir talked to mbl.is last night. Ásrún Helga Kristinsdóttir, president of Grindavík's town council, says it was a surprise that the eruption should start now. Her husband and older daughter had to evacuate Grindavík under loud siren blasts. more

Updated 19. November at 14:45 UTCSeismic activity in the Sundhnúkar crater row remains relatively low. A few earthquakes have been recorded daily, most of them located between Stóra-Skógfell and Sýlingarfell. On some days in the past week, bad weather has affected the sensitivity of the seismic monitoring system, potentially obstructing the detection of the smallest earthquakes.more
