The Eruption that Began on May 29 has Ended
Updated 24. June at 15:00 UTCThe eruption that began in the Sundhnúksgígaröð series on May 29 has ceased, with no activity observed in the crater since June 22. The eruption lasted for 24 days and was the fifth in the Sundhnúksgígaröð eruptive series since December 2023. Additionally, the lava field formed during this eruption is the largest by volume and area.more

Lived in a yurt for nine years
Þóra Sólveig and Erwin run Iceland Yurt in Eyjafjörður, where they live with their two children. Þóra Sól­veig Berg­steins­dóttir and her husband, Erw­in van der Wer­ve, offer tourists a place to stay in a so-called Yurt or shelter tent from Mongolia in Leifsstaðir in Eyjafjardarsveit. They lived in such a tent in the countryside for many years, but they built one in the Netherlands. more

No activity was detected in the crater at noon today. The eruption at the Sundhnúkagígar crater row, which began on May 29, appears to be over. No activity was visible when the civil defenses flew drones over the crater at noon for observation. more

The mainstream of lava flow from the eruption at Sundhnúkagígar crater row appears to be moving towards the defense wall at Svartsengi, but the previous night it flowed eastwards from the crater. more

Cooling lava resumed above Svartsengi
It was decided to start cooling the lava again last night to slow down lava tongues that were splattering over the defense wall. The civil defense coordination center was activated last night when three lava tongues started moving over the defense wall at a similar location to Tuesday, above Svartsengi. About 35 firefighters were in the area, as well as contractors working on bulldozers. The fire chief in Grindavík says the work is a co-production of work equipment and water. more

A group of tourists rescued on Svínafellsjökull glacier
The Coast Guard's helicopter was called out to Svínafellsjökull glacier, south of Vatnajökull glacier, around 11 pm last night. The rescue teams of Landsbjörg and the helicopter team of the Icelandic Coast Guard were called out late last night for a group of tourists who were in trouble and had lost their way up on Svínafellsjökull glacier in southeast Iceland. more

Today marks one month since the beginning of the eruption that is ongoing at the Sundhnúkur crater row. The eruption, which began on the evening of March 16, is the fourth in a series of eruptions that started when magma began accumulating beneath Svartsengi in late October 2023.more
