New eruption could start with little notice
Model calculations show that the magma that ran from Svartsengi to Sundhnúksgígar crater row on Saturday was about 1.3 million cubic meters. Magma levels under the Svartsengi volcano are continuing to increase, which could end in a new magma outburst and even a volcanic eruption. A volcanic eruption could start with very short notice, even less than 30 minutes. It is also most likely that an eruption will occur between Stóra-Skógafell and Hagafell. more

High alert yesterday with evacuations, but then diminished activity
Grindavík. Yesterday most specialists in volcanology thought that an eruption was pending due to the amount of magma accumulated in the magma channel, which had exceeded the amount that caused the last eruption to occur. Everything went on high alert and both Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon were evacuated. The Icelandic Met Office announced that the likelihood of an eruption was very high, and possibly within hours, if not minutes. more

Water shortage cannot be ruled out in case of another eruption
The lava flow from the eruption on February 8 got close to the Blue Lagoon and the powerstation of HS Orka in Svartsengi. It cannot be ruled out that water shortage could repeat itself in Suðurnes if eruptions start again on the Reykjaness peninsula. more

The weather in Iceland in 2023
The weather in 2023 was mostly favorable. It was calm, dry, relatively little snow and stormy days were quite uncommon. However, the year was cooler compared to the most recent years. The average nationwide temperature was 0.1°C colder than the average temperature between 1991 and 2020, and 0.4°C colder than the average temperature of the last ten years. It was relatively coldest in the North, while the Southwest and Southern coast were relatively warmer. The weather was particularly cold in the beginning of the year and again in March. June, on the other hand was exceptionally warm in the North and East. It was the warmest June on record in many places in those regions. The year was relatively dry, with precipitation below average across most of the country. There were several dry periods during the year, such as in March and July, but there were also periods of heavy rain in between. May and June were particularly wet and gloomy in the southern and western regions.more
