The City wants to bring nature back
This is how city officials see this area by Sæbraut looking as a "nature area". At the last meeting of the Environment and Planning Council in Reykjavík, proposals were presented aimed at turning green areas in several locations in the city into “natural areas.” In 2016, a proposal was presented to the Environment and Planning Council for a total of 31 hectares of grass areas requiring mowing, which could be converted into natural areas, . As a result, the 14 hectare area around the city had ceased to be mowed. The project was expected to result in significant savings for the city. more

United around our Values: The Reykjavik Declaration of the European Council
Now Latvia will chair the European Council for the next six months. The Heads of State of the Council of Europe adopted the Declaration of Reykjavík at their meeting in Reykjavík today and established an international damage register for Ukraine. Support for Ukraine, a resolution in favour of Ukrainian children, and the commitment of the states to human rights, democracy and the rule of law were the main focus of the Declaration. more

Secret message in the hammer
Gylfadóttir, Iceland's Foreign Minister, handing the parting gift, the hammer, to the new chair,  Rinkevics, Foreign Minister of Latvia, who will chair the council for the next six months. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, handed the hammer to the Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics. The hammer was carved by the artist Sigríður Kristjánsdóttir especially as a parting gift. The hammer has a small secret compartment and Gylfadóttir said she had placed a secret message to Rinkevics in it. more

The creation of the Register of Damages in the Council of Europe was concluded by signing in Harpa this morning. The register is set to be operational for three years, where data is documented and claims for damages, losses or harm caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. more

Raise the alert level due to cyber attacks
Harpa Concerthall where the European Council Summit is held for the 4th time since the Council was founded in 1949. The National Police Commissioner in coordination with the CERT-IS and the Directorate of Communications have declared an alert level of civil protection uncertainty over cyber attacks that can be linked to the European Council summit currently taking place in Reykjavík. This is reflected in an announcement from the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, which earlier reported that the websites of public institutions were down because of the attacks. more

Seismic activity around Askja increased in August 2021 as uplift, most likely caused by a magmatic intrusion, began. The seismic activity was more elevated in November and December 2021 and has since the start of 2022 remained steady. The weather in Iceland in 2022
The weather in 2022 was variable, but the annual mean of temperature, wind and pressure were mostly around average. In the country as a whole the temperature was equal to the 1991 to 2020 mean, but 0.3°C below the mean of the last ten years. It was relatively warmest around the South coast. The total annual precipitation was slightly above or slightly below average at most stations. But it was unusually wet in Reykjavík and at some locations in the Northeast. Average pressure and wind speed were around the long-term mean.more
