Erla Ásmundsdóttir made her long-held dream of going to sea come true last year and now works as a chef at the trawler Helga María RE-1, owned by Brim. The avalanche would probably have reached the settlement
Here you can see the cross 17 metre high cross barrier last Monday, March 27th, below Drangagil gorge in Neskaupstaður. The avalanche hit the cross barrier at immense speed and the snow was caught in the barrier and was thrown up into the air. Last Thursday another avalance was heeding the same way but was halted before it hit the barrier. The avalanches that hit Neskaupstaður on Thursday are expected to be the largest in the town’s history. Especially considering how large they would have been, had there not been a support structure in the source areas and a protective barrier down the hill. more

Seismic activity around Askja increased in August 2021 as uplift, most likely caused by a magmatic intrusion, began. The seismic activity was more elevated in November and December 2021 and has since the start of 2022 remained steady. The weather in Iceland in 2022
The weather in 2022 was variable, but the annual mean of temperature, wind and pressure were mostly around average. In the country as a whole the temperature was equal to the 1991 to 2020 mean, but 0.3°C below the mean of the last ten years. It was relatively warmest around the South coast. The total annual precipitation was slightly above or slightly below average at most stations. But it was unusually wet in Reykjavík and at some locations in the Northeast. Average pressure and wind speed were around the long-term mean.more
