Icelanders read or listen to an average of 2.4 books a month, and almost one third of the population reads a book every day or more often, according to the results of a survey on the nation’s attitude towards reading.

The lights lit on the Yulecat in Lækjartorg
The lights were lit on the Yulecat in Lækjartorg downtown Reykjavík yesterday. The mayor, Dagur B. Eggertsson was at the lighting ceremony and the musical trio Zimsen sang a few Christmas songs and Grýla and Leppalúði turned up, but they are the parents of the 13 yulelads in Iceland.

Testerone prescriptions for women have multiplied since last year
The prescriptions of the male hormone testerone for women has multiplied in a short amount of time. The testerone prescribed is a topical gel used on the skin. “Up to september 2021 there were as many presciptions for the hormone issued every month as had been in a whole year the previous years. It is not known whether all the prescriptions were issued to women battling menopause,” says Sigrún Hjartardóttir gynecologist at Kvenheilsa or Women's health center of the capital region.

Drones are very effective for rescue teams
Within the rescue group REY-SAR in Reykjavik, there is an active group that performs drone flights, as in the rescue service, there has been a good experience of using drones to search for missing people. Using thermal-cameras can be useful because they detect signs of life and are useful when exploring rocks, creeks, rocky beaches and similar conditions.

An accident at the Akranes Sports Hall
A construction crane fell on top of Akranes Sports Hall yesterday, causing damage to the roof. When the crane fell young kids were training in the building. Thankfully noone was hurt. The street was closed off while attempts were madeto get the construction crane off the roof.
