Arnar Pétursson came in first in the Reykjavík Marathon 2022
Arnar Pétursson was in great spirits after winning the Reykjavík Marathon 2022. The Icelandic champion Arnar Pétursson came in first in the Reykjavík Marathon this morning. Hann ran the marathon in 2:35:18 but there were only a few seconds between him and Silviu Stoica who came in second at 2:35:37. more

Most pledges for Hilmar Gunnarsson in today's marathon
Hilmar Gunnarsson with his son Kristófer. Hilmar Gunnarsson is going to run 10 kilometers for his son Kristófer and all the kids in the SLF's Rehabilitation Center in Reykjadalur tomorrow in the Reykjavík Marathon sponsored by Íslandsbanki. He has already accumulated almost 1,5 million ISK in pledges, but all the money will go to Reykjadalur, a summer camp for disabled children and teenagers. more

The eruption at Meradalir has been losing momentum for the last ten days
The geophysicist Páll Einarsson says that the volcanic eruption in Meradalir has been slowing down considerably in the last ten days. He says it is difficult to know whether this is a slowing phase and the eruption will gain more power soon or if the eruption is permanently losing momentum. more

Volcano will either die down or simmer for months
In the last few days, the eruption of the Meradalir volcano has been considerably slowing down. The lava flow is only about one-third of what it was at the beginning. A volcanologist says it is impossible to tell how it will develop, whether it will die out or continue for months.  more

There are examples of people taking their children to the eruption site in Meradalir in spite of it being closed says Bogi Adolfsson who is in Þorbjörn Rescue team to mbl.is. The walk to the volcano and back is 14 km with elevation and through rough terrain, which people should keep in mind. more

Less lava is flowing at Meradalir than in the beginning of the eruption. The walking paths to the eruption site at Meradalir is closed today due to weather. This is confirmed by Kristín Jónsdóttir a specialist in natural disasters at the Met Office, but the information is also to be found on safetravel.is. more

Unusually high waves in Reynisfjara Black Beach today and tomorrow
Reynisfjara is one of the most popular tourist destination in Iceland. However, it is not without dangers, and quite a few fatal accidents have happened there when people venture into the sea. The waves in Reynisfjara Black Beach will reach up to 3.7 meters today. Tomorrow they will be even higher, or up to 4.7 meters, which is quite unusual. Status of unrest in Reykjanes
Preliminary deformation modelling results suggest the top depth of the new dike intrusion beneath Fagradalsfjall is very shallow - about 1 km. The magma inflow rate is rapid, almost double that observed during the first dike intrusion in february-march 2021.more
