Red alert called over plane in trouble
A red danger alert was called at Keflavík International Airport after 01.00 this morning and around a thousand people were called out in response. The incident was triggered when pilots on an approaching passenger jet received a low fuel warning from their plane. The transportation accidents investigation committee is now working to find out what went wrong. The aeroplane landed normally and nobody was hurt. more

The drinks manufacturer Ölgerðin joined the main Nasdaq stock exchange in Iceland yesterday. Its first day of trading was rather gentle, seeing its share price drop from 10.04 krónur to 9.99 krónur in 299 million krónur of trade at the close of trading. more

All the suspects in the drug bust Icelandic
Part of the drugs seized by the Icelandic Police in the recent drug bust. The suspects, arrested in relation to the big drug bust cases that were reported yesterday, were all Icelandic men, and mostly in their forties, although there was quite a wide age gap between the youngest and the oldest, according to Grímur Grímsson Chief of Police in the Central Police Investigation Department. more

First cases of monkeypox reported in Iceland
The tests taken in Iceland are sent abroad for confirmation of monkeypox. It looks like the first cases of monkeypox were diagnosed yesterday in Iceland. Two middle aged men were diagnosed with monkeypox in a test in Iceland, and their tests will be sent abroad as soon as possible to confirm the diagnosis. Earthquakes on the Reykjanes peninsula
More than 3000 earthquakes have been automatically detected nearby Eldvörp in the Reykjanes/Svartsengi volcanic system in the past week. Since yesterday (15.05), nine earthquakes had magnitude above M3 and two above M4. The largest event had a magnitude of M4.3 occurred on 15.05 at 17:38 UTC. The seismicity is located at a depth between 4 and 6 km.more

The weather in Iceland in 2021
The weather in 2021 was mainly favorable, wind speed was below average and stormy days were relatively uncommon. The annual mean temperature was slightly above the 1991 to 2020 mean at most stations, and it was considerably dry in all parts of the country. Snow conditions were remarkably light in the Southwest during the year. The number of snow-covered days in Reykjavík were only 17 and only once been fewer. The summer was exceptionally warm, sunny, and dry in the North and East, the warmest on record in many places in these regions and many maximum temperature records were broken. The monthly mean temperature reached 14 °C at several stations this summer. It is the first time that the monthly mean temperature reaches 14°C at any station since the beginning of observations. The year was sunny in Akureyri and the total number of sunshine hours in Akureyri has only once been more.
