A new City Council and an issue agreement will be announced today
It seems most likely that either Einar Þorsteinsson, the frontrunner of the Progressive Party or the sitting mayor, Dagur Eggertsson in the Social Democratic Alliance will take the mayor's seat. Today at 3 o’clock PM a new City Council will be announced in a press conference as well as their new issue agreement. The Progressive Party, with The Social Democratic Alliance, The Pirate Party and the Reform Party have been in talks for over nine days and have found a way to move forward. more

The suspect of a murder this weekend is in police custody
The location where the police was called because of an assault last Saturday night. A man in his 20s was taken into custody Saturday night and will be until the 1st of July while the police is investigating a murder that happened in the eastern part of Reykjavik last Saturday night. more

Ukranian refugees celebrating and focusing on better times
The association Refugees which have organized the reception of Ukranian refugees in Iceland had a big party on Thursday when they left the former location at Guðrúnartún to go to a bigger space in Aflagrandi. "I am so grateful to everybody who has given us a helping hand here in Guðrúnartún. We are saying goodbye and want to thank the staff of Pipar Advertisement Agency for housing the operation for the last three months," said Sveinn Rúnar Sigurðsson, who is a doctor and the director of the association Refugees which have been organizing the reception of refugees from Ukraine. more

169 refugees registered as illegal in Iceland
169 applicants for international protection (129 men and 40 women) are considered to be staying in Iceland illegally and must leave the country, according to the Icelandic authorities. Justice minister Jón Gunnarsson appeared before the Alþingi judicial and educational affairs committee this week to give an update on the status of applicants slated for deportation. more

Property tax system “broken”
Finance minister Bjarni Benediktsson says the current property tax system is fundamentally flawed. The registered value of properties in Iceland will go up by a record roughly 20 percent in January, which will result in tens-of-thousands of krónur higher property taxes. Property tax is not the only charge based on registered property values, either. more

A 19.9% hike in property taxes
Almost 20% hike in property taxes is going to be hard for both homes and businesses. The real estate market has been very hot in Iceland and it is reflected now in a huge hike in property taxes. This year the tax goes up 19.9% on average nationwide and will bring in 12,627 billion ISK for the year 2023 according to a newly published real estate appraisal from the Icelandic National Registry. more

The earthquakes are causing uncomfortable uncertainty
The Prime Minister of Iceland, Katrín Jakobsdóttir. Yesterday it was decided in a meeting of the National Security Council to form a response team because of the earthquakes in the Reykjanes peninsula and possible volcanic eruptions. A 49 year old case reopened
The road in Óshlíð was very dangerous because the mountain is steep and mud- and rock slides were common. The police in the Westfjords dug up að body that belonged to a 19 year old teenager who died in an motor accident in Óshlíð almost 50 years ago. Óshíð is an old dangerous road that used to be between Hnífsdalur and Bolungavík, but now there is a tunnel where the most dangerous part used to be. more

Earthquakes on the Reykjanes peninsula
More than 3000 earthquakes have been automatically detected nearby Eldvörp in the Reykjanes/Svartsengi volcanic system in the past week. Since yesterday (15.05), nine earthquakes had magnitude above M3 and two above M4. The largest event had a magnitude of M4.3 occurred on 15.05 at 17:38 UTC. The seismicity is located at a depth between 4 and 6 km.more

The weather in Iceland in 2021
The weather in 2021 was mainly favorable, wind speed was below average and stormy days were relatively uncommon. The annual mean temperature was slightly above the 1991 to 2020 mean at most stations, and it was considerably dry in all parts of the country. Snow conditions were remarkably light in the Southwest during the year. The number of snow-covered days in Reykjavík were only 17 and only once been fewer. The summer was exceptionally warm, sunny, and dry in the North and East, the warmest on record in many places in these regions and many maximum temperature records were broken. The monthly mean temperature reached 14 °C at several stations this summer. It is the first time that the monthly mean temperature reaches 14°C at any station since the beginning of observations. The year was sunny in Akureyri and the total number of sunshine hours in Akureyri has only once been more.
