Kourani has arrived in Syria after deportation from Iceland

Mohamad Thor Jóhannesson, formerly known as Mohamad Kourani, has completed his sentence and was deported on Tuesday. He was taken to his home country, Syria.

Mohamad is banned from returning to the Schengen Area for the next 30 years. He was released from custody after serving a third of his sentence. This is in accordance with temporary legislation providing that foreign offenders who have committed crimes in Iceland can be released […] more

No action over police officer who ordered man to delete video recording

Nefnd um eftirlit með störfum lögreglu [the Police Oversight Committee] has completed its examination of an incident in which a police officer ordered a man to delete a recording of police arresting a man in Reykjanesbær in May.

The man suffered severe burns. He poured a flammable liquid over himself. Police officers used a Taser on him. Police believe the man set himself alight after officers used the Taser on him. He was flown by air […] more

Reports of mink received from Westfjords to Vestmannaeyjar

The public appears to be much more alert to mink than before after hundreds of animals escaped from Dalsbú mink farm in Mosfellsdalur at the end of July. The case is under police investigation. It is believed that someone broke into the farm and released the animals.

There was a major response in Mosfellsdalur and traps were set up in the area. People were encouraged to report any mink they encountered to their municipality.

Received benefits without having worked in Iceland
The offices of the Social Insurance Administration. Morgunblaðið has obtained documents showing that a number of foreign nationals come to Iceland and receive municipal financial assistance for years at a time. The assistance is intended as an emergency measure for people who are unable to support themselves by other means. more
