Westfjords walk to 'give Icelandic a chance'

This Wednesday, Ísafjörður sees the first of three walks, where the main aim is to chat together in Icelandic while going for a stroll.

The "conversational walk", led by Jóna Simonía Bjarnadóttir, is in cooperation with Gefum íslensku séns (Give Icelandic a Chance) and Háskólasetur Vestfjarða (the University Centre of the Westfjords).

43 burglaries and thefts reported in two weeks
Ásmundur Rúnar Gylfason says the group has previously been in trouble with the law. A total of 43 burglary and theft cases have been reported to police between July 1 and today, including 20 in downtown Reykjavík. more

18-year age minimum in outdoor changing rooms, following 'incidents'

For safety reasons, children are no longer allowed to be unaccompanied in the outdoor changing rooms at Laugardalslaug, Vesturbæjarlaug and Sundhöllin in Reykjavík.

The outdoor changing rooms are separate from other changing rooms at these pools and staff are not permanently present there.

Bird spotted in Iceland for the first time ever
The American Tree Sparrow's rusty-red crown stands out prominently. An American Tree Sparrow is currently staying in the Kjós area of southwest Iceland. The species has never before been recorded in Iceland and has only been seen once previously in Europe, about a decade ago in Scania, Sweden. more

Kópavogur contract award suspension request rejected

Kærunefnd útboðsmála (the Public Procurement Complaints Committee) has rejected a request from Kópavogsbær (Kópavogur municipality) to lift an automatic suspension preventing a contract from being entered into for work on the main pitch of sports club HK in the Kórahverfi neighbourhood of Kópavogur.

Travel delays yesterday after caravan left road

Yesterday, traffic delays developed on Hellisheiði and Holtavörðuheiði when a car towing a caravan that caught the wind left the road while travelling towards the capital area.

Police officer Jón Þór Karlsson said yesterday that traffic moved well after the accident was cleared.
