F35 over Kjöl closed after bus sticks in mud

A bus has been stuck in mud on Kjalvegur since yesterday. Many highland roads are wet after rainy weather in recent days.

Vegagerðin has banned all traffic over Kjöl from Hveravellir to Kerlingarfjallavegur. A coach is stuck there with its front end stuck down in muddy ruts, and has not moved since yesterday afternoon.

No comms work outsourced after dismissals, but mayor received press release 'favour'

The mayor of Reykjavík says no press officer work was outsourced after staff dismissals last week. She received assistance from one of the owners of the consultancy Athygli, who is an alternate city councillor for the Independence Party, with writing a press release.

No press officers have been rehired, but agreements have been made with two employees to work until the end of the year while work is done on new arrangements.

Record cocaine seizure yet to impact market
A large quantity of cocaine was seized by police in June. The chief physician at Vogur Addiction Treatment Center says large drug seizures have not historically had a noticeable impact on the supply of illegal drugs in Iceland. more

The Ferris wheel towers over Reykjavík Harbor for the third summer in a row. A Ferris wheel has been erected at Miðbakki by Reykjavík Harbor for the third consecutive summer. more

MAST considering putting cameras on board whaling ships

Matvælastofnun (Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, MAST) wants to add cameras on board whaling ships Hvalur 8 and Hvalur 9 in connection with its monitoring of whaling this year. An inspector would switch them on when pursuit of an animal begins. This would be a new element in the authority’s monitoring of whaling.

Parts of Laugardalslaug close as stand demolition prepared

Five hot tubs south of the stand at Laugardalslaug, as well as a steam bath and two of four private changing rooms, will be closed for an indefinite period from today.

Both sides must make concessions for pilot wage agreements to be reached

Wage talks between pilots and Icelandair have made little progress, according to the chair of FÍA. The negotiating committees of the pilots and Icelandair are, however, continuing their efforts.

The negotiating committees signed a joint declaration on 16 June on a managed work plan under the direction of the State Mediator. The aim is to renew wage agreements by 15 September.
