6,000 Devices Still Unable to Call Iceland’s Emergency Number
Thousands of mobile devices in Iceland remain unable to connect to emergency services months after the country’s 2G and 3G networks were switched off, according to the telecommunications regulator. Ólafur Aðalsteinsson, head of infrastructure at the Icelandic Telecommunications Authority, said around 6,000 devices are still flagged as incompatible with emergency calling. Icelandic state acquitted in the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has acquitted the Icelandic state of the claims of the company Vélfag, which became this summer the first Icelandic company to be subjected to trade sanctions in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The case of Ivan Nicolai Kaufmann, the company's majority owner, was dismissed.

Minister wants to toughen penalties for off-road driving

The Minister of the Environment says off-road driving in the highlands is unacceptable. His ministry is working with the Nature Conservation Institute on tightening penalties for such violataions.

Over the last weekend The Police in the South of Iceland fined a group of tourists who were caught driving off-road at a large scale. They were driving two Land Rovers and are said to have been driving around in a closed area at Kötlujökull […] more

Union leader says whaling brings a lot of revenue

Activists from the Paul Watson Foundation are in Iceland do document the whaling season and to try and stop whaling in Iceland. A union leader that says whaling brings a lot of revenue. The first whales of the season have been caught.

At least three fin whales have been caught off the shore of Iceland and brought to Hvalstöðin in Hvalfjörður. The quota this year is 150 fin whales, which is a 20% reduction.

Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn keeps surging in polls

Samfylkingin (Social Democratic Alliance) is measured as the largest party with 25,2% support in a new poll by Maskína. Next is Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn (Independence Party) with 22,7%, that is 3% more than in the last Maskína poll.
