Iceland among eleven states seeking to restrict visas for Russians

Foreign and interior ministers from eleven European states within Schengen have signed a letter urging the European Commission to tighten and harmonise rules on the issuing of visas to Russian citizens.

Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Justice are among them. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirms this to RÚV.

Dozens of foreign offenders with no connection to Iceland are currently serving sentences in Icelandic prisons. Preparations have begun at the Icelandic Prison and Probation Administration and the National Commissioner of Police’s Repatriation and Escort Division for the removal of foreign offenders from Iceland. Under amendments to the Execution of Sentences Act approved by Parliament on Monday, foreign inmates may now be granted parole after serving one-third of their sentence. more

Ásgeir: Insufficient use made of first-time buyer exemptions

The financial system in Iceland is considered strong and well placed to deal with shocks. Household and corporate debt is generally moderate and arrears are low, a statement from the Financial Stability Committee says.

Driving licence rules change: medical certificate not needed until age 75

The Minister of Infrastructure has made changes to the regulation on driving licences. The most significant change concerns the requirement for a medical certificate for older drivers.

20 unlicensed guides stopped this year

Foreign guides who travel around the country with groups without the required permits appear to be increasing in number. So far this year, lögreglan á Suðurlandi (south Iceland police) has stopped twenty such groups. It says it has a better grasp of illegal tourism activity than before.
