Heiða hands Hildur keys to mayor's office

Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, the outgoing mayor of Reykjavík, handed her successor Hildur Björnsdóttir the keys to the mayor’s office this afternoon.

Heiða also gave Hildur a framed photograph of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir playing hopscotch. Hildur said that Vigdís had always been a role model for her.

Push to ensure drivers get fuel VAT cut

Samkeppniseftirlitið (Icelandic Competition Authority) has requested data from the oil companies to assess whether a reduction in VAT has been passed on to consumers.

VAT on fuel was reduced on 1 May from 24% to 11% in response to price increases on the global market. The change is temporary and applies until the end of August.

Jónas’ bones may not be examined without court order

Þingvallanefnd (Þingvellir Committee) says it is not permitted to grant permission without a court order to open a grave and access the bones of the national poet Jónas Hallgrímsson for DNA sampling.

There has often been speculation that a Danish baker, rather than Jónas, rests in the grave.

New rules secure daylight for urban homes

New provisions on daylight in the building regulations, which entered into force on 1 May, are intended to ensure that all homes have sufficient daylight from now on.

Experts say daylight has been neglected for years in urban densification, with serious consequences for residents.

In recent years, thousands of homes have been built in Iceland that would not meet the new requirements.

Samfylkingin largest party but Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn surges, suggests poll

Samfylkingin (Social Democratic Alliance) is measured as the largest party in Gallup’s new national poll, with 28,4% support, while Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn (Independence Party) is the second largest, with 23,5%.

Samfylkingin (Social Democratic Alliance) has been the largest party in all Gallup polls since January 2023.
