Strong earthquake strikes Mosfellsheiði
Looking across Hveradalabrekka, not far from the earthquake's epicenter. Increasing geothermal activity has been observed in the area in recent years. A strong earthquake struck southwest Iceland at 1:45 p.m. today. more

Hengill quake felt across capital was magnitude 4.5

An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred in Hengill at 1:45 pm. It was felt clearly, among other places, in Hveragerði and Selfoss, in the capital area and in Akranes.

Elísabet Pálmadóttir, natural hazards specialist at Veðurstofa Íslands (Icelandic Met Office), says the source was west of Húsmúli in the western part of Hengill. An earthquake swarm began early yesterday morning and the earthquakes now number around 600. This is the […] more

Ancient treasures found in Árbær

A centuries-old stone cross came out of the ground during an archaeological excavation in Árbær last week.

Sólrún Inga Traustadóttir, archaeologist, says the find was unexpected. Research has been under way there for ten years.

A large number of archaeologists, archaeology students and others have been involved. “We are probably up to 100 if I include everyone, the specialists,” says Sólrún.

Suspected suicide at Hólmsheiði prison

The man who died in Hólmsheiði prison yesterday has been named as Sigurður Fannar Þórsson. It is believed that he died by suicide.

Sigurður was serving a 16-year prison sentence for killing his daughter.

Sævar Þór Jónsson, the man’s lawyer, sent RÚV a statement about the case. It reads as follows.

Fox count falls by 40%

The number of foxes in Iceland has fallen by 40% since 2011, according to a new population assessment by Náttúrufræðistofnun (Icelandic Institute of Natural History).

It is estimated that the fox population numbered 7.800 animals in 2011, but 4.700 in spring 2024.

Ester Rut Unnsteinsdóttir carried out the assessment on behalf of Náttúrufræðistofnun Íslands.
