Alþingi reconvenes after Easter break

The first sitting of Alþingi since Easter got underway this afternoon.

Three items are on the agenda for the meeting; firstly, unprepared questions.

The first reading takes place on two government bills. One concerns a temporary reduction in value added tax on fuel to counter inflation, which the government announced on Friday. The bill will be taken to its first reading today.

Prison Capacity Strain Raises Safety Concerns in Iceland

FÍB welcome fuel VAT cut

The managing director of FÍB expects that a reduction in fuel prices will help to curb inflation. A fall in global crude oil prices in recent days is expected to be reflected in prices for consumers in Iceland.

Drivers have been hit by huge price increases at the pumps since the start of the conflict in the Middle East. The cost of petrol has soared by 24 ISK per litre - or thirteen percent - this year alone.

Injured crew member airlifted off Látrabjarg
From a rescue exercise with the helicopter TF-GRO. A crew member suffered a leg injury aboard an Icelandic fishing vessel off Látrabjarg yesterday, prompting a response from the Icelandic Coast Guard’s helicopter unit. However, reaching the vessel was not straightforward. more

Light winds, but wet for many

Easterly or variable winds of 3 - 10 m/s are expected across most of the country, increasing to northeasterly 10 - 18 m/s in the Westfjords through much of the day before easing later in the afternoon. There will be periods of rain or showers, with occasional sleet or snow showers in western areas.

Conditions will turn mostly dry in the north and east after midday, while showers develop in the southeast during the evening.

Passengers informed about low Vestmannaeyjar flypast - airline was not

Passengers on board the Icelandair aircraft that flew low over Vestmannaeyjar on Saturday were informed in advance about the flypast. It was not however carried out with the airline’s knowledge, and a senior flight operations manager says permission would likely not have been granted.

The case is now with the police and Samgöngustofa (Icelandic Transport Authority). One passenger says it was nonetheless an extraordinary experience.

In the accompanying video, the aircraft appears to be flying at an altitude of around 100 meters above the town. An Icelandair Boeing 757 flew at low altitude just above the town of Vestmannaeyjar yesterday. more
