Earthquakes in Mýrdalsjökull
Looking west over Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Katla. An earthquake measuring 2.2 in magnitude occurred in Mýrdalsjökull glacier just before 4:00 p.m. today. Five smaller earthquakes have been recorded afterward. more

Thunder and lightning among yellow weather warnings

There are warnings of thunderstorms with frequent lightning across the capital area and South Iceland today, until 6pm. The advice is to avoid water, hills in terrain, and open ground. People are encouraged to show caution and monitor weather forecasts.

Elsewhere, tomorrow, yellow warnings of wind and snow activate across Breiðafjörður, the Westfjords, Northwest Iceland and Northeast Iceland.

Referendum on continuing EU accession talks slated for August 29

Iceland will vote on whether to continue accession talks with the European Union on August 29, after the government approved the Foreign Minister’s parliamentary resolution on holding such a referendum.

Iceland formally applied for membership of the European Union in July 2009 and formal negotiations began a year later.

Judo athlete and horticulturist among defendants in Reykholt case

Reykholt is a peaceful town of around 370 people, that tourists visit after seeing Gullfoss and Geysir.
