Route 1 open between Núpsvatn and Höfn, but impassable further east

The ring road, Route 1, between Núpsvatn on Skeiðarársandur and Höfn has been reopened. The road was closed at Kirkjubæjarklaustur last night due to weather.

Vegagerðin (Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration) reassessed the situation this morning and then moved the closure from Klaustur to Kálfafell.

An uncertainty level has been declared at Fagridalur due to avalanche risk. Gale-force winds are affecting the Eastfjords, and an uncertainty level has been declared at Fagridalur due to avalanche risk near Grænafell. This was stated in a post by Eastfjords Police on Facebook. more

Snow, storms, and yellow warnings for many

Severe weather is forecast in many parts of the country due to strong northerly and north-westerly winds, with blizzard conditions in places. Northern Lights display was 'the greatest ever'

Many people witnessed a magnificent spectacle on Saturday night when the northern lights danced across the sky.

Guðmundur E. Magnússon, captain with the tourism company Elding, who has taken tourists on northern lights tours for more than a decade, says he has never before in his career seen northern lights as colourful and beautiful.
