One injured after explosion at Grundartangi aluminium plant

A fuse blew at a substation in Norðurál’s aluminium plant in Grundartangi today, injuring one worker.

This has been confirmed by Sólveig Bergmann, Norðurál’s spokesperson, though she says she currently has no information on the condition of the injured employee.

She states that an electric arc was formed, which happens when an electrical current travels through gas.

Egill Heiðar is new director of Borgarleikhúsið

Egill Heiðar Anton Pálsson has been appointed as the new director of Borgarleikhúsið (The City Theatre of Reykjavík). He will officially assume the position at the end of April.

In a statement from Borgarleikhúsið, he is described as one of Iceland’s leading theatre artists at present. He has extensive experience in the performing arts, both in Iceland and internationally.

Eruption could occur with “very little warning”

Around 700 earthquakes have been recorded in the seismic swarm that began off the south west coast of Iceland on Wednesday.

It is only a matter of time before the stress from magma accumulation is released in a magma intrusion and an eruption, which could begin with very little warning, according to a natural hazard specialist.

Man missing in east for five days is found

The man, who was found between Seyðisfjörður and Loðmundarfjörður yesterday with a foot injury, had to sleep outdoors under the open sky in the cold, night after night.

He is from the United States and has visited Seyðisfjörður several times in recent years.

Earthquake swarm at Reykjanestá subsides
About 70 earthquakes have been detected at Reykjanestá in the last twelve hours. The earthquake swarm that began near Reykjanestá the previous day has significantly diminished. Over the past 12 hours, nearly 70 tremors have been recorded in the area—down from more than 200 the night before. more


The man was found with signs of life in Gufunes but later died of his injuries. Jón Gunnar Þórhallsson, chief of police for South Iceland, says he cannot disclose further details about the sequence of events leading to the death of the man found in Gufunes on Tuesday morning. The case is being investigated as a possible homicide, extortion, and deprivation of liberty. more
