45% of Icelanders against religion in schools
More Icelanders are against religion in schools today than three years ago. According to a new survey conducted by marketing company Maskína, over 45 percent of Icelanders believe that religious ceremonies, prayers or reading from the bible has no place in the public school system in Iceland. Between 35 and 36 percent of Icelanders however believe religion should be a part of schooling. more

Driver in Núpsvötn accident out of intensive care
Búið er að ræða við báða bræðurna sem komust lífs af. The driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser jeep which crashed over the Núpsvötn bridge killing three people is out of intensive care and recovering in another unit of the National University Hospital. Police have been able to get a report from him about the accident. more

Drivers warned about huge reindeer flock in North East Iceland
Reindeer descending onto roads in the lowlands can create a traffic hazard. A very large group of reindeer were spotted by the road at Háreksstaðir in North East Iceland yesterday and the Iceland Road Administration has sent out a notification to drivers to take great care when driving in these parts. more

Children injured in bridge accident on road to recovery
The accident occurred on the Núpsvötn bridge on December 27th. Police are waiting for the results of an autopsy of the passengers who died when a jeep plunged through a railing and off a bridge at Núpsvötn as part of their investigation to find out what happened. Four were injured in the accident including two children who are on the road to recovery. more

Storm in most parts of Iceland- tourists rescued from Holtavörðuheiði
Heiðin er lokuð. Several rescue teams across Iceland have been dispatched this morning due to a storm with snow and bad visibility. Nine tourists got stuck in Holtavörðuheiði in North Iceland but have been helped out by SAR teams. more

Sharp earthquake felt in Reykjavik last night
The origins of the earthquake are marked by a green star. At around three am a sharp earthquake was felt in Reykjavik with many locals feeling their homes trembling. Around 25 aftershocks folowed of a smaller scale. The larger earthquake was of a magnitude of 4.4. more

The European Network of Observatories and Research Infrastructures for Volcanology EUROVOLC is a H2020 Research and Innovation Project of the European Commission. It will construct an integrated and harmonized European volcanological community able to fully support, exploit and build-upon existing and emerging national and pan-European research infrastructures, including e-Infrastructures of the European Supersite volcanoes. The harmonization includes linking scientists and stakeholders and connecting still isolated volcanological infrastructures located at in situ volcano observatories (VO) and volcanological research institutions (VRIs). more

100 years since Katla erupted
Today, 12 October, is the 100-year anniversary of the 1918 eruption of Katla. The volcano is considered one of the most hazardous of Iceland's 32 active volcanic systems. During the last 1100 years, Katla has erupted at least 21 times, with an average repose interval of around 50 years. The current one-hundred-year repose marks the longest period since a Katla eruption. The Katla volcanic system is located in the eastern volcanic zone. It is characterized by an 80-km-long fissure swarm and an ice-clad central volcano. The central volcano is covered by the Mýrdalsjökull ice-cap and it includes a 9 by 14 km caldera, with ice-thickness up to 700 m.more
