Photos of the Year exhibition opens today

Drivers hit by fuel price rise of 13% since start of year - 24 ISK per litre

Drivers have been hit by fuel price rises of 24 ISK per litre - that is, thirteen percent - since the start of the year, according to price monitoring conducted by Alþýðusamband Íslands (Icelandic Confederation of Labour).

The data are based on the weekly average of the lowest prices available on the market.

Not recommended that children move to Grindavík while uncertainty remains

It is not recommended that families with children move back to Grindavík while uncertainty remains, and a comparable arrangement needs to be developed for volcanic eruptions and seismic activity to that which applies to avalanches.

Puffins return to Iceland

The puffin, one of the country’s traditional signs of spring, was seen both in Grímsey and at Borgarfjörður Eystri yesterday. Sisters Halla Ingólfsdóttir and Unnur Ingólfsdóttir spotted puffins in the cliffs south of the lighthouse in Grímsey, while Björn Aðalsteinsson saw them at Hafnarhólmi in Borgarfjörður Eystri.

Temporary fuel VAT cut to 11%

Leaders of the three governing parties have announced temporary economic measures which aim to address economic uncertainty and rising oil prices, as well as tackling inflation.

There are three temporary measures, taking effect on 1 May and expiring on 31 August this year.

Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir says they create breathing space to develop long-term solutions.
