Grindavík documentary gains support from Sharon Stone
Sharon Stone The documentary Ó góða gamla Grindavík was broadcast on Icelandic National Television over Easter. The film was directed by Margrét Hrafnsdóttir and focuses on the natural disasters on the Reykjanes Peninsula and the hardships the residents of Grindavík have endured. It drew attention that the well-known actress Sharon Stone is one of the film’s producers, credited as an “Executive Producer.” more

More oppose EU membership than joining, suggests poll

A new Gallup poll conducted for Viðskiptablaðið suggests that 47% of the public are opposed to Iceland joining the European Union, while 40% support membership. Thirteen percent are undecided.

When only those expressing a view are considered, 54% are opposed to Iceland joining the European Union, compared with 46% in favour, suggests the poll.

Strong winds and rain will likely be the phrase that comes to mind for many today. The winds won't reach gale force, but will still be strong, and in place for much of the country. No to Nice Air flights until autumn

Residents of Akureyri and others in North Iceland had hoped that Nice Air would begin operations as soon as possible, but in a response to RÚV the company says this will not happen until at least the end of October. The situation in the Middle East has dashed hopes of flights this summer.

Severe wind damage in Þórshöfn

Strong winds hit Þórshöfn on Monday night and into yesterday morning, causing the roof to be torn off the Beitingahöllin, an old building largely owned by the municipality. The roof came off sheet by sheet and caused damage to a nearby building owned by Ísfélagið.

Fundraising gig for new instruments at Hvolsvöllur school

On Wednesday 8 April, a fundraising concert will be held at Midgard in Hvolsvöllur, with the aim of raising money for new instruments for the music classroom at Hvolsskóli.

Musical activity within and outside the school is both extensive and varied, but many of the instruments currently in use are showing signs of wear.
