Current and former Dickenbauch players turned out in large numbers for the celebration, with 30 attendees. On March 10, the 1,000th match in the history of the Icelandic recreational football club Dickenbauch Sportverein GmbH was played (Match 1000). Every single game has been recorded in a database, who showed up, the result, whether anyone arrived late, or even scored an own goal. more


Doctors working in remote parts of northern Iceland have taken part in emergency training designed to prepare them for situations where harsh weather prevents patients from reaching hospital. Over the weekend, 21 medics gathered in Siglufjörður to practise life-saving procedures under the supervision of specialists from Landspítali and Akureyri Hospital. Bláskógabyggð to purchase Laugarás land
Significant development is planned in Laugarás, according to the mayor of Bláskógabyggð. A geothermal spa was opened there this autumn. The four municipalities in the upper Árnessýsla region, which have jointly owned the Laugarás land in Bláskógabyggð, have agreed that Bláskógabyggð will buy the shares of the other three municipalities. more

Gerda shares long life secret on 100th birthday

Gerda M. Guðmundsson, a resident at Droplaugarstaðir in Reykjavík, celebrates her 100th birthday today.

She has lived in Iceland since 1949, when she came to Iceland with a group of women from Lübeck in Germany.

Gerda saw an advertisement from Bændasamtökin (Farmers’ Association of Iceland) in a newspaper stating that women were needed to work on farms here.

Three taken to hospital after explosion

Three people were taken to hospital after an explosion in commercial premises in Reykjavík this morning.

A large number of people were in and around the premises of Fóðurblandan, and paramedics checked whether any of them had been injured and provided assistance as needed.

The explosion occurred at around 7:30 am. A large number of firefighters and police officers were sent to the scene to respond.

Some Icelanders see 'gold' in solar eclipse

Some Icelanders look at the sky and see 'gold' in the forthcoming solar eclipse this summer, and are attempting to rent out their homes at sharply increased prices.

The governor of Seðlabanki Íslands (Central Bank of Iceland) welcomes the opportunity for the tourism sector and compares it to the likely boost from the large capelin catch. Others, however, hear warning bells and ask whether Iceland is sufficiently prepared.
