Attempt made to smuggle cocaine base in wine boxes

Three men, one from Brazil, one from France and the third from Spain, have been charged with attempting to smuggle into Iceland nearly one litre of cocaine base, hidden in two red wine boxes.

The intention was to further process the material in Iceland and sell it.

Fire in unmanned Breiðholt bus

Slökkviliðið á höfuðborgarsvæðinu (Capital Area Fire Brigade) extinguished a fire in a bus at the junction of Grýtubakki and Arnarbakki in Breiðholt shortly before 10am.

The bus was unmanned and not in service when the fire broke out.

A duty officer says that the call-out was received at 9:37 am and that two pump appliances were sent to the scene

There are more women aged 100 and older than men. Forty-one Icelanders are aged 100 and older. Two of them still have a spouse living. more

Municipal elections 2026 - don't miss your chance to vote

Iceland goes to the polls on May 16 2026, to elect councillors in municipalities across the country.

Unlike elections to choose MPs to sit in Alþingi, and therefore the Icelandic government, or in votes to select the President, you don't necessarily need to be an Icelandic citizen to vote in municipal elections in Iceland.

Over 800 submissions in government consultation portal on aquaculture bill

Hundreds of people have submitted comments to the government consultation portal on the draft bill by the Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries on aquaculture. Among other things, it is pointed out that there are no penalties for escapes or fish mortality.

Neighbour tried to extinguish fire and rescue woman

Late on Sunday night, Slökkviliðið á Suðurnesjum (Suðurnes fire brigade) received a report of a fire in an apartment building on Vatnsholt in Reykjanesbær.

The fire broke out in an apartment on the ground floor and the woman who lives there was trapped inside the apartment. Flames met the fire brigade when it arrived at the scene. Smoke specialists found the woman quickly and she was taken to Reykjavík to hospital. The woman’s dogs […] more
