Residents will meet to discuss spending unwanted grant

The country’s smallest municipality, Tjörneshreppur, in the Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla area of north-east Iceland, has a population of around 50. An unexpected ISK 248.000.000 population-decline grant was recently given to the municipality by the Jöfnunarsjóður sveitarfélaganna (Municipal Equalisation Fund).

Report: collision between aircraft and snow-clearing vehicles narrowly avoided

Only about six seconds separated a collision between a cargo aircraft and snow-clearing vehicles at Keflavík Airport on 2 December 2024.

The incident occurred after an air traffic controller allowed snow-clearing vehicles onto the aircraft’s runway before the aircraft had taken off. He had shortly beforehand issued the aircraft with take-off clearance but then forgot this when he allowed the snow-clearing vehicles onto the runway.

Right decision by Guðbrandur to quit: “Painful to lose a good colleague”

Guðbrandur Einarsson, an MP for Viðreisn (Reform Party), has decided to resign his seat in parliament.

He was the subject of a police investigation in 2012 due to an attempt to purchase sexual services.

Guðbrandur has been an MP for the South Constituency since 2021 and chair of the Environment and Transport Committee since last year.

Suing the state over Sóltún

A group of relatives at Sóltún intend to sue the Icelandic state over construction work at the nursing home. The relatives believe that the construction constitutes a violation of the residents’ human rights. This is stated by Einar Stefánsson, whose wife, Bryndís Þórðardóttir, has Alzheimer’s disease and has lived at Sóltún for three years.
