Farmed fish from a land-based aquaculture facility escaped into the sea in Tálknafjörður toward the end of last month. The operator did not activate a contingency plan in response to the escape, but maintains that most, if not all, of the fish were dead or injured.

Young Arctic char escaped from a land-based fish farming facility near Tálknafjarðarhöfn (the harbour in Tálknafjörður) towards the end of last year.
Matvælastofnun (Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority) did not receive notification of the escape until more than a week later, when it received an anonymous tip-off after dead and half-dead Arctic char juveniles were found in the harbour. This is stated by Matvælastofnun today.

A survey by Maskína suggests the highest level of satisfaction yet for the end-of-year TV satire show, Áramótaskaupið. Maskína began surveying public attitudes towards the programme in 2011. The survey was conducted from 9 to 13 January 2026, with 971 respondents.
