The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that the Icelandic state violated the rights of a young woman who reported a rape to the police, after the case was dropped at the time. A spokesperson for Stígamót says the perpetrator’s confession was on record in the case and questions whether the Icelandic justice system is capable of handling such cases. more

“Everything that could burn has burned”

The lögreglan á höfuðborgarsvæðinu (capital area police) today began an investigation into the origin of a fire in a warehouse in Gufunes in Reykjavík. The fire broke out at around 5 pm yesterday and firefighting operations were completed at around 7 pm last night.

Arson clear in Hjarðarhagi fire but no prosecution possible

The investigation into a fire in a flat at Hjarðarhagi last summer has been completed. The investigation revealed that the blaze was caused by arson.

This is confirmed by E. Agnes Eide Kristínardóttir, superintendent of the investigative division of the lögreglan á höfuðborgarsvæðinu (capital area police).
