Concern over government inaction after closure of Bakki silicon plant

The Icelandic Federation of Trade Unions (Samiðn) is calling for realistic government action to improve the operating environment of PCC so that production can resume at the silicon plant in Bakki. The plant’s closure is described as a major blow to employment in North Iceland.

Ice buildup after snowplows couldn’t get through
Snow clearing proved challenging in Reykjavík. Thick ice ridges formed on main roads in Reykjavík during this week’s snowstorm, while nearby municipalities were less affected. The problem arose because snowplows from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin) were unable to reach the roads in time to clear the snow when it was freshly fallen. more

Isavia defends airport access policy amid criticism from sociologist

Ordered to clean up property within two weeks

The East Iceland Health Committee has agreed to drop daily fines on the condition that property owners in Eskifjörður clean their plots by 15 November.

If this is not done, the Health Inspectorate will carry out the cleanup at the owner’s expense.

Icy roads and gale force winds for many

A yellow weather warning is in effect across most of Iceland due to storm conditions and snow thaw. Travel may be disrupted today, and pedestrians are urged to take extra care. Roads could become extremely slippery, and the strong winds will only make conditions worse.

Accompanying today’s weather is heavy rainfall, and in Eskifjörður there has been significant precipitation since last night.

Ring road closed in two locations
Cars in traffic. The Ring Road is currently closed at Fagurhólsmýri due to severe weather, as well as on the stretch under Eyjafjöll and over Reynisfjall toward Vík, according to the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. more

Construction mistaken for quakes

Unusual micro-seismic activity was recorded in Svartsengi yesterday - but it has since been revealed that the tremors were not natural earthquakes, but explosions caused by construction work near the Blue Lagoon.

This is stated on the website of the Icelandic Met Office.

Cautious industry welcome for housing plans
