Sharp increase in vehicle excise taxes
The Icelandic Automobile Association (FÍB) has not received any explanation from the ministry regarding the tax increase. The government’s draft budget projects a significant rise in state revenue from vehicle excise taxes, with income from this source expected to increase by 66.2% next year compared to projected revenue for this year. more

New car registrations up 28%; over 10,000 and counting

New registrations of passenger cars in Iceland so far this year have passed 10,000 - a sizeable increase of 28% year-on-year.

Registrations reached 10,116 in the first eight and a half months of this year. There is a broad split between registrations of cars for rental, and those for private use, at 52% and 48% respectively.

Walrus swimming in Vopnafjörður

A walrus visited Vopnafjörður today, swimming in the sea opposite the fish processing plant.

Rafael Jón Gunnsteinsson spotted the walrus at midday, and then was trying to find him again.

“He was just sunbathing. He was totally relaxed, resting and having a little look at Vopnafjörður. Then he went off. I am looking for him now,” says Rafael.

Volume of magma nearing threshold; eruption or magma flow could start at the end of the month

Land uplift and magma accumulation continue beneath Svartsengi, where eight to nine million cubic metres of magma have accumulated since the last eruption.

The likelihood of a new event, magma outflow and/or an eruption, increases when around 11 million cubic metres have accumulated.

The hazard assessment is unchanged but will be reviewed next week.

Whale calf carcass washes up near Húsavík

Staff at the Húsavík Whale Museum received a report yesterday of a whale carcass that had washed ashore at Tungulending, just north of Húsavík.

The animal is just over three metres long and, according to researchers, appears to be a female calf.
