99% of Icelanders aged 18-29 say they live in 'a good place for gay people'

According to the survey, an overwhelming majority of the population – just over 89% of those expressing an opinion – believe they live in a good place for gay people, compared to nearly 86% a decade ago. Almost one-third of respondents did not take a position and say they do not know.

Fifty-year-old mystery of Iceland’s first bank robbery solved

In January 1975, Mánudagsblaðið published a short article titled “First bank robbery in Iceland?”, describing how unknown individuals had broken into the Kópavogur branch of Útvegsbankinn (the Fisheries Bank) and stolen 20–30 thousand krónur in small change. The report was based on unnamed sources and was not confirmed by the bank.

The Reykjavík Marathon was established in 1984. Nearly eleven thousand people have registered for the Íslandsbanki Reykjavík Marathon, which will take place on August 23. Registration closes next week, and the window to secure a spot in the race is quickly closing. more

Þorlákshöfn defendant pressured to change lawyer and 'take blame'

A handwritten letter, from one defendant in the Þorlákshöfn case to another, was found in the outdoor area of the remand unit at Hólmsheiði prison.

The men were both in solitary confinement. In the letter, one defendant urged the other to change lawyers and take full responsibility for the case.

Estonian tourists who witnessed the incident say that visitors are not sufficiently aware of the dangers posed by the beach. Estonian couple Raiko Suurna and Aivi Murd-Murulauk were on a family trip in Iceland with their children and a family of friends when they witnessed the fatal accident at Reynisfjara Black Beach on Saturday. more

Ísafjörður flights not financially viable and need government subsidy

Operating flights to Ísafjörður on commercial terms is not viable. This is the conclusion of a market analysis commissioned by Vegagerðin on the flight route.

“The conclusion is that government subsidies are required for flights to Ísafjörður to be feasible,” says Bergþóra Kristinsdóttir, Director of the Services Division at Vegagerðin.
