Swedes Eva Leach and Gabriel Sabadin have worked in the tech industry for years. Their new app is called Baibe, and they want to use it to try to combat loneliness, which affects about one in every three people globally.

Taxi driver and friend sentenced for rape

Héraðsdómur Reykjavíkur (the Reykjavík District Court) found two men guilty of rape and unlawful coercion, as they had exploited the woman's state of intoxication to harm her. Both received sentences of two and a half years’ imprisonment.

In February last year, the taxi driver, Mohamed Ali Chagra, picked the woman up from a restaurant and drove her to the home of Amir Ben Abdallah in Kópavogur.

Practising response to sea threats between Iceland and Norway

Iceland is hosting the annual NATO submarine surveillance exercise Dynamic Mongoose, which this time is taking place south of the country and in the waters between Iceland and Norway.

Four warships and two submarines, along with a coast guard vessel and a helicopter unit from Landhelgisgæslan (the Icelandic Coast Guard), are taking part in the exercise.

'Make Ísafjarðardjúp a whale sanctuary'

Hvalaskoðunarsamtök Íslands and Samtök ferðaþjónustunnar (the Icelandic Travel Industry Association) have submitted a proposal to the Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries that the entire Ísafjarðardjúp be designated as a whale sanctuary.

The reason is the proposed minke whale hunts in and near the fjord, which the associations consider incompatible with whale watching.

Major earthquake recorded in Bárðarbunga
Two earthquakes over magnitude 3 have been detected in Bárðarbunga over the weekend. A magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck Bárðarbunga shortly after noon today, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Earthquakes of this size are considered common in the area. more
