Government working on shortening unemployment benefit period

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing announced on the government’s website today that it is working on shortening the maximum length of time during which individuals can receive unemployment benefits.

Currently, the maximum entitlement is 30 months. The statement did not specify what the new maximum duration will be.

Punctual puffins arrive in Grímsey

The puffin is not only famous for its colourful beak and comical sounds but also for being exceptionally punctual, returning to land at the same time each year.

According to the website of the Municipality of Akureyri, the first puffins have now settled in Grímsey. This hardy little seabird spends most of its life at sea but comes ashore for breeding season.

The Minister of Health says it is vital to do everything possible to prevent the substance from entering the drug market and to be prepared if it does happen to prevent serious consequences. The Ministry of Health convened an emergency meeting in response to the recent seizure of counterfeit OxyContin tablets that were found to contain nitazene, a highly potent and life-threatening synthetic opioid. The meeting included representatives from national health institutions, law enforcement, and harm reduction organizations. more

Tuberculosis cases detected in Iceland each year, but far fewer than in many other countries

Guðrún Aspelund, Chief Epidemiologist, addressed the issue on Rás 2 today.

She was asked, among other things, whether people in Iceland are vaccinated against TB.

“No, we aren’t vaccinated against tuberculosis in Iceland — and in fact, we never have been. TB transmission was brought under control here through other measures, so there was never considered to be a need for vaccination.

Survey suggests more favour than oppose EU membership

The survey, conducted 7–16 March, saw over 44% of respondents say they were completely, very, or somewhat in favour of Iceland joining the EU. 36% said they were completely, very, or somewhat opposed. These results are similar to those seen three years ago, when support for membership had also been on the rise. (In this survey, 20% of respondents said they neither favoured nor opposed membership.)
