Eruption officially over, even if wider seismic event is not

The volcanic eruption that began southeast of Þorbjörn on 1 April has officially come to an end, though seismic activity continues to be recorded.

According to a statement from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, however, the event is not considered fully over, as a number of small earthquakes are still being measured in the northern part of the magma intrusion.

Fears that Hamarsvirkjun and access road would spoil beautiful valley

According to those who regularly walk in the valley, a road through Hamarsdal for the proposed Hamarsvirkjun hydropower plant in East Iceland would be intrusive, visually disruptive, and would spoil the appearance of the area.

Opinions are deeply divided on the proposed 60-megawatt Hamarsvirkjun, with disagreement over whether the project would benefit or harm tourism.

Charged with attempting to kill after Verslunarmannahelgi stab attack

A man has been charged with attempting to kill another man in a stabbing incident that occurred over Verslunarmannahelgi (Merchant’s Weekend) in Akureyri. He stabbed the victim four times with a knife.

The attack took place during Merchant’s Weekend 2024, near Ráðhústorg square in central Akureyri.

20,000 OxyContin tablets seized at Keflavík Airport

Sources say the tablets intercepted were high-strength OxyContin 80 – the highest dosage available of the powerful opioid painkiller. In 2023, the street price of a single tablet was around 5,750 ISK, putting the total value of the shipment at approximately 115 million ISK.

Úlfar Lúðvíksson, Chief of Police in Suðurnes, stated that the case is in its early stages, and he could not disclose specific details.

Lava that came from the short lived volcanic eruption that has ended. Seismic activity in connection with the April 1st magma flow remains persistent, with 80-120 earthquakes occurring every hour, according to the latest statement from the Icelandic Meteorological Office. more
