5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Reykjanestá
A series of earthquakes started this morning due to the magma run. This afternoon two earthquakes were felt widely in the south of Iceland. Two significant earthquakes were recorded near Reykjanestá shortly before 5 p.m. today, with the largest measuring 5.3 in magnitude, according to Jóhanna Malen Skúladóttir, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. The magnitude of the smaller tremor is still being assessed. more

Unusual activity observed as the eruption progresses
Benedikt Halldórsson, head of earthquake research at the Icelandic Meteorological Office and research professor at the University of Iceland, analyzes the behavior of the eruption today for mbl.is. Despite the apparent subsiding of the eruption, seismic activity remains strong, with continued tremors detected in the northeastern section of the magma corridor, according to Benedikt Halldórsson, director of natural hazards at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. more

Woman dies in traffic accident in South Iceland

Rocks fell from Steinafjall mountain, and a large boulder struck a car traveling east. Three foreign women were in the vehicle. The driver died at the scene, while the other two sustained only minor injuries.

When emergency services arrived, the driver was still trapped inside the vehicle. Medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

Route 1 is closed east of the Holtsá river in the Eyjafjöll area.
