East–west runway ban at capital airport lifted

The Icelandic Transport Authority has withdrawn the directive that closed the east–west runway at Reykjavík Airport.

The closure was enacted at short notice on 8 February, banning both general aviation and air ambulance flights on the runway—although air ambulance use was later allowed again.

Security and defence conference took place today

Still waiting for answers on crop failure compensation

Many carrot farmers experienced poor yields this year. Icelandic carrots have now sold out at Sölufélag garðyrkjubænda (the Horticulture Farmers’ Sales Cooperative) and there is little left of other types of produce.

Farmers growing crops outdoors are growing increasingly frustrated as they await answers from the Ministry of Employment and Innovation on whether they will receive compensation for damage caused by severe weather.

"Let's expand the party" was Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir's slogan in the chair election. Now the party has grown slightly larger and is beating the Social Democratic Alliance. A new survey by Maskína for Vísir shows the Independence Party leading with 24.3% support, making it the largest political party in the country. The Social Democratic Alliance has gained ground, while the Liberal Reform Party remains stable and the People's Party sees a decline. more
