'Minutes are vital' in air ambulance transport

A medical evacuation aircraft en route to Reykjavík nearly had to land at Keflavík Airport yesterday.

The east-west runway at Reykjavík Airport remains closed due to tree growth in Öskjuhlíð, and still only the north-south runway is operational.

Root Vegetable Mash Blamed for Þorrablót Sickness
Several Þorrablót celebrations in Iceland have recently been marred by food poisoning outbreaks. Last weekend, 75 attendees in East Iceland fell ill after consuming a contaminated root vegetable mash. Tourist numbers decline

Around 122,000 tourists arrived in the country in January, according to a count by Ferðamálastofa (the Icelandic Tourist Board). This represents a 5.8 per cent decrease compared to the same time last year.

Since July of last year, the number of tourists had been increasing year-on-year.

European parliamentary group: explore Iceland & Norway EU entry

The liberal parliamentary group Renew Europe in the European Parliament has, in a letter to Ursula Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (ESB), proposed examining whether to initiate accession negotiations with Iceland and Norway. The news was reported by Norwegian agency NTB.

Would give up jeans 'if in the national interest'

Jón Gnarr, MP for Viðreisn, says he was surprised to receive a remark about his attire in Alþingi after he appeared there wearing jeans yesterday.

He brought up the incident during a parliamentary debate on parliamentary affairs and recounted what had happened.

9.9 MW hydroelectric power plant in the works
Lake Hagavatn. It is expected that the water level could reach up to 23 km². The expansion of the lake is believed to have a positive effect on the rise of particulate matter in the short term. Hagavatnsvirkjun ehf. plans to build a 9.9 MW hydroelectric power plant at Hagavatn Lake, south of Langjökull glacier in Bláskógabyggð. The preliminary design of the power plant, which has been named Hagavatnsvirkjun, is being worked on, and the company has now submitted an environmental impact assessment report for the power plant's environmental impact assessment in the planning portal. more
