The programme for today's official opening began at 1.30pm, with a church service at Dómkirkjan, in the centre of the capital.
The Bishop of Iceland, Reverend Guðrún Karls Helgudóttir, officiated the service along with Reverend Elínborg Sturludóttir, the cathedral priest. Reverend Óskar Hafsteinn Óskarsson, pastor in Hruni and dean of the Southern Deanery, delivered the sermon.

The severity of weather warnings for Iceland tomorrow and Thursday has been raised.
From 7pm tonight, yellow warnings move in, starting across the western half of the country. Strong southerly and southwesterly winds, gale or gale force, will affect these areas, before a yellow warning becomes active everywhere.

The Prime Minister says it is understandable that the teaching profession’s trust in the government has been damaged in recent years - but that the new government is prepared to embark on the value assessment journey with teachers.
A strike began yesterday in 21 preschools and primary schools. Intensive meetings were held over the weekend with the state mediator in an attempt to avert the strikes, but no agreement was reached.
