Yellow alerts across the country

Yellow weather warnings have been issued for the entire country on 18 January 2025 due to deteriorating weather conditions with northeasterly gales and snowfall.

Teitur Arason, meteorologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, reports that the weather front approaching from the south will bring heavy snow and strong winds to the southernmost regions late this evening.

Bjarni Daníel Þorvaldsson, a musician with the band supersport!, shared their approach to staying true to their Icelandic roots at the Eurosonic festival.

Rural housing association acquires property in capital

Brák, a housing association established to address rural housing needs, has purchased 49 apartments in Reykjavík - despite its charter stipulating that its operational area should be outside the capital region.

The chair of the board stated that the purchase was initiated by the Housing and Construction Authority (Húsnæðis- og mannvirkjastofnun) to resolve financial challenges faced by another rental association.

Never before have there been more Icelandic-farmed fish
A production record was set in fish farming in Iceland last year. More salmon and Senegalese flounder than ever have been produced. 54,789 tonnes of farmed fish were produced in Iceland last year, which is more than ever before. This is 9.6% more than was produced in 2023. The biggest difference is in salmon, whose production increased by 5,730 tonnes between years, but the largest increase in relative terms was in Senegalese flounder, which was 43% higher in 2024 than the previous year. more

Record number of quakes near Grjótárvatn

An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 was recorded near Grjótárvatn yesterday morning, marking the strongest earthquake in the area since increased seismic activity began in August of last year.

Close to 100 earthquakes above magnitude 1 have been recorded at significant depth near Grjótárvatn so far this month.
