Man who killed his wife subjected her to decades of abuse

The death of a woman at the hands of her husband in Akureyri this spring marked the conclusion of domestic violence that reportedly began in the previous century. The man was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Monday. The judgment, released today, reveals a history of severe and prolonged abuse.

Warmth and lack of snow delay ski openings

Mild temperatures in recent days have delayed the opening of many ski areas across the country. Plans were initially for Bláfjöll to open yesterday, but the weather on Sunday caused further postponements.

"There was pouring rain and strong winds, so on Monday everything here was like walking on a sponge," says Einar Bjarnason, operations manager at Bláfjöll. Despite this, he remains optimistic.

Iceland judged "Europe's most relaxing destination"

New research from travel site BookRetreats.com maps where "true relaxation" still exists - and their findings suggest that Iceland is the most relaxing place in Europe - and third in the world.

According to the report, Iceland has the best peacefulness score globally, but it also leads all destinations in the serenity category.

Unemployment reaches 3.7 per cent

Unemployment was measured at 3.7 per cent last month, according to the new labour market report from Vinnumálastofnun (the Directorate of Labour), which was released yesterday. This is higher than at the same time last year and higher than in October.

However, the difference is not significant, with 3.7 per cent compared to 3.4 per cent previously.
