Cold no match for keen campers

At the Hamrar campsite in Akureyri, the temperature was minus five when RÚV visited early in the morning. By then, some tourists who had camped there were already off on their daily adventures. Others had slept well in the frost but said it was especially useful to be able to go into the service building to have breakfast.

Allocating quotas despite advice
Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson has signed a regulation on the allocation of deep-sea redfish quotas, contrary to the advice of scientists. The government has issued a 3,800-tonne quota for deep-sea beaked redfish in the current fishing year despite scientific advice that such fishing should not be conducted to protect the stock. more

Diegó was "early Christmas present"

Diegó, one of Iceland's most popular cats, was stolen from his bed at the A4 shop in Skeifan.
Now found, he is back in the hands of his owners after a flurry of activity on social media.

Democracy Party to "offer new choice"

Arnar Þór Jónsson founded the Lýðræðisflokkurinn [Democracy Party] only a month before the parliamentary elections, scheduled for next Saturday. Previously, he has worked as a lawyer, judge, and substitute member of parliament for the Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn [Independence Party]. He also ran for president in the last presidential election.

Reindeer chase horses through Eskifjörður

Residents of Eskifjörður were astonished yesterday when they saw what appeared to be a male reindeer chasing a herd of horses back and forth across the fjord. The horses ran as if their lives depended on it, while the reindeer gave chase, seemingly determined to catch them.
