Highly fertile oystercatcher
Here is a picture of the rare five egg oystercatcher nest. As can be seen the nest itself is a simple affair. Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) usually lay two to four eggs. Thus it was a big surprise for the brothers Markús and Jason Ívarsson, when they found a oystercatcher nest on Markús’s farm in Flóahreppur, where oystercatchers have long been nesting at this time of year. more

EasyJet starts direct flights to Akureyri
EasyJet is planning to operate direct flights from Gatwick, London to Akureyri next winter on scheduled services. The airline has already opened for bookings, with the first flight on October 31. It will operate twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, through March 2024. more

The area has been subject to harsh westerly winds today, with maximum wind speeds of 29 meters per second at 10 o’clock. At that time gusts of up to 49 meters per second were recorded. more

Seismic activity around Askja increased in August 2021 as uplift, most likely caused by a magmatic intrusion, began. The seismic activity was more elevated in November and December 2021 and has since the start of 2022 remained steady. At the same time, the uplift has continued at a very stable rate since the beginning of the unrest.more

The weather in Iceland in 2022
The weather in 2022 was variable, but the annual mean of temperature, wind and pressure were mostly around average. In the country as a whole the temperature was equal to the 1991 to 2020 mean, but 0.3°C below the mean of the last ten years. It was relatively warmest around the South coast. The total annual precipitation was slightly above or slightly below average at most stations. But it was unusually wet in Reykjavík and at some locations in the Northeast. Average pressure and wind speed were around the long-term mean.more
